Vol. 517 No. 1

Written Answers. - Architectural Heritage.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

169 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 475 of 21 March 2000, she will recommend to Dublin Corporation that Fr. Matthew Hall, Dublin 7, be listed as a protected building. [9234/00]

The protection of the architectural heritage is primarily a matter for the planning authorities. This is reinforced in the recently enacted Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1999. My role is to provide advice to planning authorities in the exercise of their functions.

As my officials have not been asked to inspect or provide advice on the Fr. Matthew Hall, I have no basis on which to make a recommendation to Dublin Corporation. I suggest that the Deputy pursue the question of having the building recorded as a protected structure in the Dublin city development plan with Dublin Corporation. If the members of the city council so decide that the special quality of the structure merits such protection, they will include it on their record.
