Vol. 517 No. 3

Written Answers. - Teacher Training Examinations.

Ceist:

301 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will investigate a missing recording of an Irish language oral exam for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 8; if he will ensure that this person can hear the recording; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9744/00]

The person referred to by the Deputy sat the oral Irish part of the Scrúdú Cáilíochta sa Ghaeilge – SCG – the qualifying examination for primary teachers who undertook their training outside the State, in April and October 1999.

The oral Irish part of this examination has, since April 1999, been taped for the purposes of facilitating re-checks by unsuccessful candidates. The person referred to by the Deputy has requested access to the tapes of her oral examination from the April and October sittings of the exam, in which she was unsuccessful on both occasions. My Department has written to the person and explained that there is a difficulty in locating the tape of her October oral Irish examination but that the tape of the April examination, and examiner's notes in relation to the October examination, will be made available to her. A departmental inspector will also be available to the person to offer advice on any aspect of the oral Irish examination.

In the meantime, efforts are continuing within my Department to locate the tape in question. I would add, however, that there is no question of the person not having been marked for her oral Irish examination. The examiner would have marked the person on the date of the examination and the recording of the examination is not used, or never has been used, for that purpose.
