Vol. 518 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

John Gormley

Ceist:

86 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will examine the needs by a school (details supplied) in County Dublin for a full-time remedial teacher in view of the fact the current services of a half-time remedial teacher was sanctioned when the school had only half of the current enrolment; and when a full-time remedial teacher will be appointed. [9522/00]

In September 1999 the remedial teaching service was extended to all primary schools with a pupil teacher ratio of 10:1 or above. Schools with lower pupil teacher ratios were also advised that they could seek remedial support where they could demonstrate a need for such a service.

Available posts were utilised in the current school year to ensure that no primary school in the country would be without a remedial teaching service.

I can assure the Deputy that I have noted the situation to which he refers and that the remedial needs of the school in question will be fully considered in the event of additional resources becoming available to improve existing remedial services.
