Vol. 518 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

535 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education and Science his response to the request by St. Paul's special school, Beaumont, Dublin 9, for four special needs assistants; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12416/00]

Nora Owen

Ceist:

576 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science when he will sanction four additional special needs assistants for a school (details supplied) in Dublin 9 in view of the fact they are now operating the running of the school with two special needs assistants paid by his Department and are entitled to six special needs assistants; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12715/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 535 and 576 together.

The school to which the Deputies refer is one of a number of special schools which require additional special needs assistant posts to bring them into line with the recommendations of the special education review committee.

My Department is currently examining the level of special needs assistant support in place in all special schools, including the school in question, to determine the precise number of additional posts required to ensure compliance with the recommendations of the special committee.

My Department expects to be in a position to advise the school in question of its additional allocation very shortly.
