60 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Health and Children the status of the working hours EU directive in relation to junior doctors; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11985/00]

72 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Health and Children when it is planned to apply the terms of the EU directive on working time to junior hospital doctors working in Irish hospitals; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11970/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 60 and 72 together.

A conciliation conference between the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament on the draft working time directive took place in Brussels on 3 April, 2000. Agreement has been reached and the timetable for the implementation of the directive in so far as it affects NCHDs is as follows:
