Vol. 520 No. 3

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

136 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has requested that the NCCA assess the proposal of a separate Irish spoken language subject and an Irish literature course at leaving certificate; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15694/00]

In its recently published Polasaí Oideachais 2000-Education Policy 2000 Gael-Linn has put forward a proposal that the subject Gaeilge at leaving certificate be replaced by two separate subjects: an Ghaeilge, the Irish language, and litríocht na Gaeilge, Irish literature.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment has taken a decision to carry out a major review of the syllabi for Irish at Junior Certificate and established Leaving Certificate levels. It will also carry out a review of Irish in the transition year programme.

I have requested that a copy of Gael-Linn's document be forwarded to the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment for consideration.
