Vol. 520 No. 5

Written Answers. - Irish Council for People with Disabilities.

Michael Noonan

Ceist:

156 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his Department had any objection to the continuing in office of the former chief executive of the Irish Council for People with Disabilities (details supplied); if, as the major provider of funds to the organisation, he had satisfied himself with his stewardship; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16220/00]

The Irish Council of People with Disabilities is a voluntary organisation funded in the main by way of a grant which is paid by my Department.

The person to whom the question refers was appointed by the Irish Council of People with Disabilities to the position of acting chief executive of that organisation in May 1998. On 5 October 1998, he was dismissed by the organisation from that position.

Subsequently, the matter of his dismissal became the subject of a High Court action in which he was the plaintiff and both the Irish Council of People with Disabilities and the Department of Justice Equality and Law Reform were named as defendants. However, all issues between the plaintiff and the defendants which were the subject of the High Court proceedings were settled by agreement negotiated in February 2000 between their respective legal representatives. Following this agreement the proceedings were struck out by the High Court on 10 February 2000.

In the circumstances it would not be appropriate for me to comment further in the matter.
