Vol. 521 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

274 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will ensure that alternative accommodation is found for a school (details supplied) in County Longford as a temporary measure until his Department sanctions an extension to the school in view of the fact that the prefab structures offered are not acceptable or suitable for these pupils; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16468/00]

Permanent accommodation to facilitate classes for pupils with autism and severe and profound general learning disability has been approved by my Department for the school referred to by the Deputy. However, I understand the school does not wish to avail of temporary accommodation while the building of permanent classrooms is in progress.

My Department's inspectorate is currently investigating the provision of suitable temporary accommodation elsewhere in the locality for the pupils in question.

I hope this matter will be resolved shortly and that the necessary provision can be put in place without further delay.
