Vol. 521 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

285 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason for the delay in sanctioning of a grant for serious repair work to St. Ita Special School, Crushrod Avenue, Drogheda, County Louth; when sanction will be granted so the work can commence and be completed before the next school term; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16479/00]

Architectural planning for the provision of improved accommodation at the school in question is proceeding as quickly as possible having regard to the large number of school building projects on hand within my Department.

It is not possible to say at this point when construction will commence.

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

286 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will direct that emergency action be undertaken to address the serious conditions at a national school (details supplied) in County Dublin which have led to teaching staff refusing to continue to work in unacceptable circumstances which derive from the original construction in 1978; his views on the report of an independent architect that the condition of the school roof is extremely poor and that promises were made to school authorities that remedial works would take place in the summer of 2000; if a timetable for remedial works will now be rescheduled for the summer months; and if he will make a statement on the matter detailing when all the outstanding works will be addressed (details supplied). [16480/00]

My Department is currently processing an application from the management authorities of the school in question for grant-aid towards improvement works.

The board of management will be kept informed of developments.
