Vol. 521 No. 1

Written Answers. - Modern Biotechnology.

John Bruton

Ceist:

62 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the composition, terms of reference and work schedule of the interdepartmental group on modern biotechnology; and when she expects this group to present its final report for publication. [13363/00]

The interdepartmental group on modern biotechnology is chaired by an assistant secretary of our Department and comprises senior officials of the Departments of Health and Children, Environment and Local Government, Agriculture, Food and Rural Development and Education and Science and a representative of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland. Officials of Enterprise Ireland and Forfás have been co-opted onto the group to assist it in its work.

The group was asked to consider the range of concerns raised, by genetic modification and to report with a co-ordinated Government position. The group has recently presented its final report to us. We plan to submit it to Government as soon as it has been given the necessary consideration, within our Department.
