Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

87 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the progress to date in regard to tree planting to commemorate the millennium; if he will outline precisely the scale of this exercise under the aegis of Coillte Teor anta; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16941/00]

A specific objective of the peoples millennium forests initiative is the planting of a native tree for each household in the country. I understand from Coillte Teoranta that up to 900,000 native seeds, mainly oak, were planted in January of this year. The germination rate is 90% and these will be planted at 16 designated sites throughout the country in autumn-winter 2000.
