Ceist:725 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs when an appeal by a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will be finalised. [19327/00]
Written Answers. - Social Welfare Appeals.
To qualify for an unemployment payment a person must be available for and genuinely seeking work. In the context of a review of his entitlements, the person concerned was asked to provide details of his efforts to find work. Based on his response a deciding officer disallowed his claim from 18 May 2000 on the grounds that he was not available for or genuinely seeking work. The person concerned appealed this decision to the social welfare appeals office. On 13 July 2000 an appeals officer upheld the deciding officer's decision.
Under social welfare legislation decisions in relation to claims and the insurability of employment must be made by deciding officers and appeals officers. These officers are statutorily appointed and I have no role in regard to making such decisions.

Ceist:726 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs when an appeal for carer's allowance by a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will be finalised. [19328/00]
The person's application for carer's allowance was disallowed by a deciding officer on the grounds that he did not satisfy the statutory condition of providing full-time care and attention for the relevant persons. His appeal against this decision to the social welfare appeals office has been considered by an appeals officer who has decided that an oral hearing is necessary. This will be arranged as soon as possible.
