Vol. 523 No. 1

Written Answers. - Fire Safety in Schools.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

1067 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will outline his policy in respect of fire safety in State funded schools; the requirement on boards of management in respect of the appointment of a fire safety officer and ensuring that school buildings comply with fire safety regulations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20369/00]

Individual school authorities are responsible for ensuring the safety and welfare of children and others in their care. My Department has issued guidelines advising schools of their responsibility under the health and safety legislation to provide a safe environment for all personnel present in the school. Schools are advised that they should identify possible hazards, assess the risks to health and safety and put appropriate safeguards in place.

While the appointment of a fire safety officer is a matter for individual boards of management, capital projects in all schools are carried out in strict compliance with regulatory fire safety standards.
