An extension of 1,097 square metres for St. Patrick's post-primary school, Naas and a refurbishment of the existing school have been agreed in principle with County Kildare Vocational Education Committee. Ceist:

215 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science his plans for the provision of the required number of second level places in Naas, County Kildare, and its precincts; when it is expected; the means by which these requirements will be met; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20796/00]

Following an evaluation of the post-primary school requirements in the Naas area, building projects were approved for all three schools in the centre. In the case of Meánscoil Iognáid Rís, the stage 1 submission, site suitability-feasibility report, in respect of an extension is being considered in the planning and building unit of my Department. The extension project at Coláiste Naomh Mhuire is well advanced and scheduled for completion in December 2000. In the case of St. Patrick's post-primary school, an extension of 1,097 square metres and a refurbishment of the school have been approved.

It is envisaged that the three post primary schools in Naas, following the completion of building projects at each, will meet the required number of second level places in the centre. However, the area will continue to be closely monitored by my Department to ensure any emerging additional requirements are addressed.
