76 Mr. Sargent asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment her views on the need to raise the levels of remuneration paid to FÁS trainees at least in line with social welfare increases and other wage increases agreed under the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Each year the FÁS standard training allowance is automatically increased in line with the social welfare increases. The 2000 FÁS trainee allowances were increased in line with social welfare on 26 April. The purpose of FÁS training is to encourage people into jobs in the open labour market.
