Vol. 524 No. 4

Written Answers. - Insurance Industry.

Deirdre Clune

Ceist:

53 Ms Clune asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the action she will take to ensure that insurance companies offering life assurance will not be allowed to request an individual's genetic make-up; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22727/00]

The insurance industry in Ireland does not, at present, request genetic information about those proposing for life assurance policies. The Irish Insurance Federation has been discussing with various interested parties, including my Department and its agencies, the terms of a draft code of conduct which it proposes to introduce for insurers. I understand that the draft code would not permit an insurer to require a proposer for an insurance policy to undergo genetic testing. I am, therefore, satisfied that there is no need for Government intervention in this matter at present.
