Vol. 524 No. 4

Written Answers. - Health and Safety Regulations.

John Perry

Ceist:

54 Mr. Perry asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the plans she has to provide participants on FÁS community employment schemes with vouchers towards the cost of purchase of safety equipment and, in particular, safety shoes; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22728/00]

The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations, 1993, state that it is the duty of the employer, where risks to the safety and health of an employee cannot be avoided or limited, to provide personal protective equipment for use by the employees. The employer in the case of a community employment project is the sponsor, and it is his responsibility to provide all tools, equipment and protective clothing necessary for participants to undertake their work in safety. The cost of providing these items is normally funded by FÁS through the materials grant available to each project.
