170 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Defence the number of legal cases for medical costs and loss of earnings brought against his Department for each of the past years 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000; the number of these cases which were settled out of court; and the number that are pending to date. [23524/00]
The number of compensation claims settled by my Department with members and former members of the Defence Forces over the period in question is contained in the tabular statements which will be circulated in the Official Report.
In addition to the claims referred to in the tabular statements, some 8,688 claims are outstanding in respect of alleged hearing loss and some 458 non hearing loss claims are outstanding.
Some of these claims contain elements of compensation for medical expenses and/or loss of earnings. However, because of the very large number of files which would have to be reviewed to extract the information requested by the Deputy, the deployment of the necessary personnel and other resources in my Department which would be required to do this work cannot be justified.
