Vol. 525 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

118 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance the current position in respect of the provision of the new Garda station in Leixlip, County Kildare; if his attention has been drawn to the urgent need for progress on the project; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23728/00]

The Commissioners of Public Works are continuing their efforts to resolve the difficulties in relation to the sites at Newtown House, Confey and at Leixlip Roman Catholic Church.

Based on information received by the Commissioners of Public Works from An Bord Pleanála, I indicated in reply to Question Nos. 464 and 487 on 3 October 2000 that the difficulty in relation to the Confey site had been resolved. It has since been learned that, in fact, this is not the case. Kildare County Council is considering the implications of An Bord Pleanála's decision regarding retention of Newtown House for development of the site.

In view of the difficulties being encountered, the commissioners have placed advertisements in national and local newspapers seeking alternative properties.

I will ensure that my office will do everything possible to expedite the acquisition of a site.
