Ceist:

188 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the total number of pupils who have left school with no qualifications, and who have left without sitting their leaving certificate in each of the years since 1990. [23733/00]

An estimated 800 pupils did not transfer from primary to second level schools in 1999, based on data from the census of primary schools on those who left during the 1998-99 school year. The corresponding figure for 1990 was estimated at 1,100.

In addition, data from the ESRI-Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment annual school leavers' surveys show the following:
