Vol. 525 No. 3

Written Answers. - Sewerage Treatment Gas Emissions.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

366 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if any figures are available in respect of various gas emissions emanating from sewerage treatment plants here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25169/00]

No such information is available in my Department. However, since treatment of sewage in Ireland is generally by biological oxidation processes, there is little, if any, release of gases, other than small emissions of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. In a limited number of locations anaerobic processes are used to digest sewage sludge. The methane produced is captured and used for heating purposes.
