Vol. 525 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Transport.

John Perry

Ceist:

382 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 1120 of 3 October 2000, he will state the progress that has been made on the extension of the bus service (details supplied) in County Sligo; when a decision will be made; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25487/00]

My Department received an application for an extension of the school bus route on medical grounds for the family concerned. The medical evidence was forwarded to the medical adviser who determined that the children's condition would not prevent them from making their way to the pick-up point.

The family concerned resides 0.4 miles from the route of service to the school. As this is considered to be a reasonable level of service in the context of the general operation of the school transport scheme, and as extra cost would be involved, it is not open to my Department to extend the service as requested.

Ceist:

383 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 1122 of 3 October 2000, he will state the progress that has been made on the rerouting of the bus service referred to; when a decision will be made; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25488/00]

As I informed the Deputy in my reply to Question No. 1122 on 3 October last, the matter is being reviewed in the light of the safety concerns raised. I anticipate that this review will be completed shortly and the Deputy will be informed of the outcome without delay.
