Vol. 526 No. 1

Written Answers. - Asylum Applications.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

249 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when he will make a decision on the application for asylum in a case (details supplied) in view of the fact that a decision is awaited since the file on this case was completed in June 2000. [26040/00]

It is not the general practice to comment publicly on individual applications for refugee status having regard to the fact that applications by their nature are made in confidence with the expectation by the applicant that such confidence will be preserved.

However, I can confirm that the applicant referred to has applied to be recognised as a refugee as defined in section 2 of the Refugee Act, 1996. As part of the investigation of her claim, she was interviewed on 9 June, 2000. It is expected that the investigation will be completed in the near future at which time the applicant will be notified of the outcome.
