Vol. 526 No. 1

Written Answers. - Refugee Accommodation.

Michael Creed

Ceist:

250 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the current situation regarding the purchase of a property by the Directorate of Refugee Services in County Cork (details supplied); when the property will be occupied by refugees; and if he has satisfied him self that the proposed use is in accordance with the planning permission granted originally for the property. [26041/00]

I can confirm that the property in question has been purchased by the Office of Public Works for use by the directorate for asylum support services as part of its overall strategy for meeting the accommodation needs of asylum seekers in the Munster region.

Some minor perimeter safety works on the property have been completed in recent days and the directorate proposes to bring this facility into use for the accommodation of ten families as part of its ongoing asylum seeker accommodation requirements in the context of the strategy referred to above.

As regards the matter referred to in the last part of the Deputy's question, the position is that this is the subject matter of correspondence between solicitors acting for third parties and the Office of the Chief State Solicitor and therefore it would be inappropriate for me to make any comment in this respect.
