Vol. 526 No. 1

Written Answers. - Psychological Service.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

279 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the South Eastern Health Board are not aware that there is no educational psychologist in Waterford; if he will have this alarming situation addressed as soon as possible. [26053/00]

My Department has provided a psychological service to post-primary schools in County Waterford for many years. Twenty five additional educational psychologists have recently taken up their positions in the National Educational Psychological Service. These newly appointed psychologists are currently receiving their induction training and will be assigned to schools in the near future. I am pleased to inform the Deputy that two psychologists will be joining the south-eastern team during the current school year in order to initiate a psychological service to primary schools in County Waterford.

The health boards are represented on the management committee of NEPS and may obtain information from that source. However, a joint NEPS-health board liaison committee has recently been established and I will draw its attention to the need to make information about NEPS available to all health boards.
