Vol. 526 No. 1

Written Answers. - Decommissioning Body.

Ceist:

142 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if, in the context of supporting the work of the International Independent Decommissioning Body and of upholding the objective contained within the Good Friday Agreement to remove all illegally held weapons, he will consider making an approach to the Libyan authorities requesting a full inventory of all weapons supplied to all illegal paramilitary organisations here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25400/00]

The Government is fully committed to supporting the work of the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning and in that context will consider, with the British Government, any proposal or request the commission may make in relation to the fulfilment by it of its mandate. No such proposal or request has been made in relation to an approach of the nature indicated by the Deputy to the authorities of any other state.

The commission has, of course, available to it assessments by the Irish and British security forces, including their estimates of the quantities of arms held by paramilitary organisations from all sources.
