Vol. 526 No. 1

Written Answers. - Prison Medical Service.

Dan Neville

Ceist:

148 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the recommendations of the report entitled general health care study of prison population, commissioned by the research policy unit of his Department; and his strategy for implementing the recommendations. [21338/00]

The report referred to by the Deputy entitled "General Health Care Study of the Irish Prison Population", which was undertaken by NUI, Galway, was published by my Department in July last. The full finding and recommendations are contained in the published document. In summary, the report recommends: a comprehensive, adequately resourced prison health care service be developed, and a health promoting approach should be developed in terms of safeguarding prisoner health and seeking to overcome the adverse effects of imprisonment.

This report has been brought to the attention of the group reviewing the structure of organisation of health care for prisoners under the chairmanship of Mr. John Olden. I have no doubt that this group, in reaching conclusions, will give due consideration to the findings of this report.
