Vol. 527 No. 3

Written Answers. - Compensation Payments.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

406 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the concerns of an organisation (details supplied) that commitments made to it in respect of the commission to inquire into child abuse and the compensation tribunal have not been honoured; if he will arrange an early meeting between this organisation and his Department in order to resolve all outstanding issues; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28721/00]

I am not aware of any commitments made by my Department to the organisation referred to which have not been honoured. However, I have said on many occasions that officials of my Department are willing to meet the group concerned; indeed within the past three weeks officials of my Department have written to the group concerned and invited it to make such submissions as it sees fit, either in writing or in person, to discuss the establishment of a body to award compensation to victims of abuse. My officials have not as yet received any request for a meeting arising out of that correspondence.
