Vol. 527 No. 5

Written Answers. - Bovine Disease.

John Moloney

Ceist:

124 Mr. Moloney asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development when the national scheme for the collection of fallen animals, which is relevant for the protection of the environment, animal health and food safety, will be put in place; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29096/00]

It is my intention to introduce a fallen animal collection and disposal scheme as early as possible in 2001. A great deal of preparatory work and consultative meetings have taken place to advance the finalisation of the scheme.

The scheme is aimed at removing any potential threat caused by unlicensed burials. In addition, it will improve the environment and help to maintain Ireland's favourable BSE status.
