The EU Commission brought forward proposals on 17 November 2000 for a draft directive on electronic invoicing. This will amend the EU sixth VAT directive to harmonise the rules on invoicing so that firms operating within the internal market will no longer have to cope with 15 different sets of rules on invoicing. It is expected that it will be discussed in the near future and will have to be agreed by the Council of Ministers before it can be transposed into national law.
