Vol. 528 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Jack Wall

Ceist:

388 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Education and Science when a person (details supplied) in County Kildare will be given special needs assistance to permit her enter the mainstream education system; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29241/00]

An application for special needs assistant support has been received by my Department and is currently being investigated by my Department's inspectorate. When this investigation is complete, officials in my Department will be in touch with the school authorities.

Pat Carey

Ceist:

389 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science when a decision will be made in respect of an application by a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11 for a special needs assistant. [29284/00]

I understand that the person referred to by the Deputy was employed as a special needs assistant at the school in question in the last school year, to assist two special needs pupils enrolled in the school at that time. Both pupils left the school in June 2000.

I also understand that when the two pupils left the school, a new application was made for special needs assistant support for two other special needs pupils.

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that 17.5 hours per week part-time special needs assistant support has been sanctioned by my Department for the school in question.

The recruitment of the part-time special needs assistant is a matter for the board of management of the school.
