Ceist:

54 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the proposals he has in relation to works to prevent coastal erosion at the sand dunes, Tramore, County Waterford; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30115/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 53 and 54 together.

Under the Operational Programme for Environmental Services 1994-1999 grant aid of some £200,000 was made available to Waterford County Council in 1996 and 1997 towards coast protection schemes at Cunnigar and Tramore costing £266,164.

Last year my Department received from the county council a consultancy study on further protection works at these locations, and the local authority put forward a proposal for development works based on the study. The council's priority was the strengthening of the promenade wall at Tramore. Under the 2000 coastal protection programme an amount of £465,000 was approved for carrying out this work.

The 2000 coastal protection programme also provided funding of £35,000 in respect of the detailed design of protection works at Cunnigar. A decision on the protection to be provided at that location will be informed by the outcome of this design project, and the allocation of funding for the carrying out of those works will be addressed in the context of overall coastal protection programmes and the funding available for such works.
