Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Irish Wheelchair Association.

Phil Hogan

Ceist:

1103 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if financial assistance can be provided to the Irish Wheelchair Association to carry out research in order to provide a listing of accommodation for people with disabilities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1937/01]

Liam Aylward

Ceist:

1110 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if his attention has been drawn to the fact that there is no official list available of accommodation suitable to per sons with disabilities; if he will make contact with Bord Fáilte to ensure that accommodation which provides this very necessary facility is listed in their guide; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2410/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 1103 and 1110 together.

Bord Fáilte, the regional tourism authorities (RTAs) and Shannon Development have encouraged and continue to encourage tourism providers to provide for the care and activity needs of disabled persons in order to help such persons make informed decisions regarding their holiday choice. The bodies contracted by Bord Fáilte to carry out inspections of tourist accommodation, request information from all operators, seeking approval or registration, on the accessibility of their respective premises. As a result, accommodation guides in respect of hotels, guesthouses, Irish homes and holiday hostels already provide an indication of those premises which have facilities and services that are accessible to persons with special needs. In most cases, symbols indicating accessibility of premises are utilised with the approval of Comhairle, the body now incorporating the roles previously carried out by the National Rehabilitation Board.

I am aware of a feeling among relevant groups, including the Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA), that there is room for improvement in relation to the inspection of premises from the disabilities perspective and the compilation of relevant information. I understand Bord Fáilte propose to research this issue with a view to an up-to-date list of accommodation accessible for people with disabilities being compiled. Bord Failte will liaise with the IWA and other relevant disability groups in this regard.

Question No. 1104 answered with Question No. 1091.
