137 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if, in view of serious allegations of malpractice over recent years, he will order an inquiry into local government management; and if he has considered abolishing the managerial system. [2650/01]
I am satisfied that the vast majority of the local authority workforce are public servants of the highest standards of integrity who provide dedicated public service. It is regrettable, if not entirely unexpected in a workforce of over 30,000, if a tiny minority does not appear to be observing these high standards. It is essential that appropriate disciplinary action is taken against such individuals to ensure that the highest standards are observed at all times and to maintain public trust and confidence in the administration of local government.
I have specifically requested managers to review the situation in their areas in relation to possible breaches of the officers regulations and report their findings to me within three months and I will consider what further action, if any, is necessary at that stage. I have no proposals to order an inquiry into local government management nor to abolish the managerial system.
