Vol. 529 No. 4

Written Answers. - Traffic Control Centres.

Olivia Mitchell

Ceist:

184 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will make special funding available to the three local authorities (details supplied) in County Dublin to equip and staff special traffic control centres. [3038/01]

Over £32 million is being made available by my Department in 2001 to the Dublin Transportation Office for traffic management grants in the greater Dublin area. It is open to the local authorities concerned to apply to the DTO for funding from this budget line in relation to appropriate traffic management measures. In this connection, the recently-published DTO document A Platform for Change which sets out an updated transportation strategy for the greater Dublin area for the period to 2016 includes a proposal for regional traffic centres.

Local authorities can also use the discretionary non-national road grants provided by my Department, together with their own resources provision for non-national roads, for traffic management initiatives related to such roads.
