Vol. 529 No. 4

Written Answers. - Architectural Heritage.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

203 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if, further to Question No. 195 of 7 December 2000, she has received correspondence from the Maynooth Castle committee, County Kildare, in relation to phase two of the restoration works to Maynooth Castle; if she will give a commitment that phase two of the project will proceed in 2001; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3109/01]

In my reply to Question No. 195 of 7 December 2000, I made it clear that, once the castle is open to the public in the second half of 2001, my Department will then be in a position to assess the needs of the site in terms of visitor numbers and facilities and make a determination as to the level, if any, of additional works required to ensure its successful operation. This remains the position. While I can confirm that officials of my Department met representatives of the Maynooth Castle restoration committee on 13 December to outline progress in relation to the development of the project, I have no record of any correspondence since this date from the committee.
