Vol. 530 No. 1

Written Answers. - Impeachment of Judges.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

56 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if it is proposed to introduce legislation to provide procedures for the impeachment of judges, and if so, when the legislation will be introduced. [3225/01]

The procedures for the impeachment of judges are contained in Article 35.4.1 of the Constitution.

The Deputy will be aware that the All-Party Oireachtas Committee on the Constitution has recommended that the same procedures as apply to the impeachment of the President of Ireland under Article 12.10 of the Constitution should also apply to judges. This recommendation will be considered by the Government in tandem with the wider question of judicial conduct and ethics discussed in the report of the All-Party Committee and which is also the subject of a recent report from the Judicial Committee established by the Chief Justice following the publication of the 6th Report of the Working Group on a Courts Commission. The report was published on 25th January last.
