90 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Taoiseach the weights used for different items of consumer spending in determining consumer price index movements. [4575/01]
The weighting pattern of individual components of the consumer price index is based on the average weekly expenditure on consumer goods and services by all private households in the country. For the present CPI series – November 1996 = 100 – these estimates were derived from the results of the 1994-1995 house-hold budget survey, updated for price changes between this period and November 1996, which is the current reference period for the consumer price index.
The following table shows the weights of the main components of the consumer price index. A more detailed breakdown of these weights is available on request from the Central Statistics Office.

91 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Taoiseach the consumer price index movement in each of the past three years in respect of items of consumer spending which are domestically traded services. [4576/01]
To comply with the Deputy's request the CSO has constructed a special composite index combining the existing sub-index of services and related expenditure with additional items such as rents and housing repair and maintenance costs. This constructed index shows that the annual average percentage increase for this category was +3.5% in 1998, +4.8% in 1999 and +6.0% in 2000. The attached table shows the data requested.
