Vol. 531 No. 2

Written Answers. - International Year of the Volunteer.

Ceist:

64 Dr. Upton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will take a days leave in order to carry out voluntary work in recognition of this year as the International Year of the Volunteer; if she will allow all staff in her Department to take a day off on a similar basis; the steps she will take to pay tribute to the International Year of the Volunteer; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5336/01]

I welcome the recognition and increased profile which the International Year of the Volunteer affords voluntary work.

Regarding the staff of my Department, the Deputy will understand that it would not be practicable to grant a day's paid leave to almost 1,000 staff members to undertake voluntary work. However, there are arrangements in place for staff who wish to participate in a voluntary capacity in charitable organisations.

Special leave without pay is available for a variety of purposes including service with voluntary organisations. Any applications received from staff in my Department for a days special leave without pay to participate in voluntary work will be favourably considered and will be examined in the context of the existing arrangements on special leave.
In addition, staff members can also be considered for unpaid leave of absence for extended periods to participate on a voluntary basis in organisations undertaking charitable initiatives.
