Vol. 531 No. 2

Written Answers. - International Year of the Volunteer.

Ceist:

86 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if he will take a day's leave to carry out voluntary work in recognition of this year as the International Year of the Volunteer; if he will allow all staff in his Department to take a day off on a similar basis; the steps he will take to pay tribute to the International Year of the Volunteer; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5341/01]

There are several provisions in the Civil Service staff regulations which allow staff to seek time off to work with voluntary organisations. My Department actively supports any staff member who has sought time off to do voluntary work. As regards the question regarding the possibility of me devoting a day to voluntary work I would support any initiative to which the House agrees on this point.
