Vol. 531 No. 2

Written Answers. - Alcohol Companies.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

98 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the action he will take with alcohol companies targeting under age sports clubs. [5237/01]

I am not aware of any particular evidence that alcohol companies are directly targeting underage sports clubs. However, the recently published Code of Ethics and Good Practice for Children's Sport, published by the Irish Sports Council and Sports Council for Northern Ireland, calls for all involved in children's sport to provide a safe, positive and nurturing environment where children can develop and enhance their physical and social skills. It also recommends that sports leaders in children's sport should refrain from seeking sponsorship from the alcohol and tobacco industries. I will be requesting officials of my Department to consult with the Sports Council with a view to assessing the current position.
