Vol. 531 No. 3

Written Answers. - Kilmainham Jail.

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

358 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if she has received representations in relation to a proposed commercial development (details supplied) opposite the historic Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin 8; and if she has, in turn, made any contact with the local planning authority in relation to the matter. [5979/01]

I have received a number of representations regarding the proposed development referred to by the Deputy. These have been primarily from people or groups opposed to the proposed development.

My Department advised Dublin Corporation that the site is considered to be of archaeological potential and as part of the planning process recommended that if planning permission for the development was to be granted that specific conditions relating to test excavations and archaeological monitoring should be attached. These conditions were requested in the interest of protecting any possible archaeological heritage which may be present on the site.

In its decision of 16 February 2001 to grant planning permission for the proposed development Dublin Corporation has accepted my Department's recommendation, and has included a Condition (No. 12) of the planning permission dealing with the archaeological potential of the site.
