Vol. 531 No. 5

Written Answers. - Deportation Orders.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

95 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of deportation orders which have been made; the percentage of illegal immigrants who have been deported; if he will give a breakdown of those remaining; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6104/01]

Since deportations commenced under the Immigration Act, 1999, I have made a total of 1,190 deportation orders. A total of 241 persons have been deported, representing 20% of deportation orders made. Of the 241 persons deported, 20% were illegal immigrants and the remaining 80% were former asylum seekers.

The following is the position in relation to the remaining 949 cases. Some 369 evaded deportation orders; 161 persons were not at their last known address for the purposes of service and 215 persons have been granted leave to seek judicial review by the courts. Arrangements are being put in place in respect of another 66 persons; 60 persons will have to have their return negotiated with the authorities in their countries of origin. Deportation orders in respect of the remaining 56 persons are being or have been revoked primarily on the basis of legal advice. In addition, a further 22 persons left the State before the deportation orders could be enforced.
