Vol. 533 No. 3

Written Answers. - Herd Depopulation.

John Perry

Ceist:

136 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 180 of 27 February 2001, he will indicate when the herd of a person (details supplied) in County Sligo will be depopulated; if he will receive compensation for the period 7 November 2000 to 6 December 2000 and from 14 February 2001 until the date his herd is depopulated, plus the 30 days destocking period; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8611/01]

I understand that the herd in question was collected yesterday and is being slaughtered today, 27 March 2001. An initial payment was made to the person concerned on the 2 February, 2001, and the final payment of the agreed valuation will be made on receipt of the appropriate documentation. The ex-gratia payment in this case will be for the period in excess of 14 days between the date of confirmation of the BSE animal and the date of the agreed valuation.

In the case of BSE, herd re-population is usually permitted within 30 days following satisfactory cleansing and disinfection of the farm. There is, therefore, no legislative provision for losses consequential on BSE depopulation.
