Vol. 534 No. 2

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

115 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the reason a person (details supplied) in County Kildare has been refused unemployment benefit or assistance; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10325/01]

The person concerned was awarded payment of unemployment assistance from 17 November 2000 at the weekly rate of £16, increased to £24 from 28 March 2001. Means at £60.00 per week, were assessed on his claim, derived from payments to him as a part-time fireman.

The person concerned appealed the award and the appeals officer upheld the deciding officers decision. The person concerned does not have sufficient contributions paid and/or credited, in the relevant contribution year, to qualify for unemployment benefit. Under social welfare legislation decisions in relation to claims must be made by deciding officers and appeals officers. These officers are statutorily appointed and I have no role in regard to making such decisions.
