Vol. 534 No. 3

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

304 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will recognise the qualifications of a person (details supplied) in County Waterford for EPT status in teaching computer studies; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10553/01]

The holders of qualifications, which do not have general recognition, must apply to the Registration Council, on an individual basis, for recognition of the particular qualifications held for the purpose of securing an incremental teaching position in a secondary school. In this context, it is necessary for a teacher to hold a degree or equivalent qualification and a teacher training qualification, both of which must be recognised by the Registration Council.

The qualifications held by the person in question do not have general recognition. An application for recognition of her qualifications was submitted and processed in accordance with the council's normal procedures. The council decided that the qualifications satisfied its requirements in relation to holding a suitable degree or equivalent qualification for the purposes of teaching computer studies. However, the council also decided that the qualifications held did not satisfy its requirements in relation to holding a suitable teacher training qualification.

The person in question has been notified of the council's decision.
