Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Sports Funding.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

78 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the total amount of public funding committed by the Government to the GAA, the FAI and the IRFU, arising from discussions with his Department regarding the use by these organisations of Stadium Ireland. [11970/01]

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

588 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the precise figure in terms of funds offered to sporting and recreational bodies engaged in the building of stadia. [12387/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 78 and 588 together.

As already outlined to the House on the Order of Business on 10 and 11 April last, a series of meetings were held with the GAA and with the FAI in the context of the Government's objective to secure an appropriate development and sharing of sports infrastructure to achieve the optimum use of available facilities for the benefit of Irish sport. Arising from these discussions, proposals have been put to both organisations, which will now form the basis of formal, legal negotiations during which the various conditions applying to financial assistance will be dealt with and agreed, as directed by Government following its consideration of the issues involved.

Arrangements are also being put in place for a meeting with the IRFU, which has already announced that all its major international games will be played in Stadium Ireland, to discuss that organisations plans for the future development of its sport in the years ahead.
