Vol. 535 No. 2

Written Answers - Social Employment Schemes.

Paul Connaughton

Ceist:

136 Mr. Connaughton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the changes she proposes to introduce on social employment schemes to allow participants over 45 years of age to work on such schemes for longer periods than currently apply; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12548/01]

All eligible persons may remain on the community employment programme up to retirement age at 65 years, subject to total participation on the programme of three years.

As identified in the PPF, some job seekers may have difficulties in getting and keeping a job in the open labour market due to age and other personal barriers such as health, literacy and numeracy factors. Appropriate long-term supports are needed for people experiencing employment barriers of this nature.

My Department is finalising proposals for a high supports process, which will enhance the range of options available for persons with employment barriers. Further consultations with the social partners on the high supports process are due to take place shortly.
