Vol. 535 No. 2

Written Answers - Crime Levels.

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

198 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the action being taken to deal with street violence and car theft in the South Dublin area; if the number of gardaí in South Dublin is adequate to deal with levels of crime being experienced by residents; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12496/01]

I am informed by Garda authorities that as part of a nation-wide initiative, "Operation Oíche" has been formally running in the Dublin Metropolitan Region South since October 2000. This operation has focused on the primary targets of public disorder, public intoxication, illicit drug use, and under age alcohol sales. An operational plan was drawn up whereby problem times and locations were identified. Public order patrols continue to target problem areas and areas where large numbers of people congregate.

I am also informed that anti-social activity associated with car theft has been reduced considerably, and that this success is mainly due to the activity of Garda special response units, public order patrols, the Garda helicopter and successful use of the "stinger" device. Gardaí take every opportunity to advise motorists on car security through the medium of local radio and community meetings.

I am advised that the present Garda strength of the Dublin Metropolitan Region, DMR, south division is one chief superintendent, one detective superintendent, three superintendents, 16 inspectors, 75 sergeants, 402 gardaí, giving a total strength of 498 gardaí.
