Vol. 536 No. 1

Written Answers - Diabetes Services.

Jack Wall

Ceist:

103 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans he has to investigate the increase in diabetes in the Eastern Regional Health Authority area; the plans he has to deal with the matter; the plans he has to increase his Department's contribution for dietary assistance for the patients; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13404/01]

As part of the Eastern Regional Health Authority's service plan for 2001, a commitment was given to review the structure and process of care for adult patients with diabetes mellitus within its area of responsibility. A task force was established to carry out the review which will detail the burden of illness and service provision within the region. The report of the group will form the basis of an effective strategy for managing diabetes mellitus. The objectives of the review group are to review the burden of illness under the headings mortality, morbidity, prevalence and outcomes and to review the services within the region.
